JSW's Vijayanagar green hydrogen initiative is among India's first attempts to inject renewable hydrogen directly into an operating integrated steel plant rather than a greenfield facility. For developers and lenders, it demonstrates how electrolyser capacity, round-the-clock renewable power, and brownfield process integration must be co-designed. It offers a template for de-risking hard-to-abate decarbonisation financing, PPA structuring, and phased offtake within India's National Green Hydrogen Mission framework, informing future steel, cement and fertiliser hydrogen tenders.
This project sits squarely within India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and SIGHT incentive framework, relevant to steel, cement and fertiliser tenders now emerging under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. It illustrates how open-access renewable procurement rules, waived ISTS charges, and green hydrogen purchase obligations can be layered into industrial decarbonisation bids, while highlighting the need for clear grid codes on large flexible electrolyser loads and standardised MNRE/BEE guidelines for hydrogen blending in metallurgical processes.
