BESS for C&I means Battery Energy Storage Systems used by commercial and industrial consumers to store electricity and use it later. In India, it is typically applied to reduce peak demand, manage time-of-day tariffs, support backup power, and improve solar self-consumption at factories, offices, warehouses, and campuses.

How can BESS help a C&I facility reduce electricity costs?

A BESS can discharge during peak tariff periods and charge during low-tariff or solar-rich periods. This helps lower maximum demand charges, shift energy use away from expensive time slots, and reduce diesel generator dependence. A basic assessment usually needs 15-minute interval load data, electricity bills, sanctioned demand, tariff category, backup requirement, transformer capacity, and existing DG or solar details. For detailed engineering, one may also review power quality, harmonics, space availability, and single-line diagrams.

Does a BESS need approvals for C&I sites in India?

Approvals depend on the project configuration and state rules. Typically, utility interconnection, electrical safety compliance, fire safety requirements, and internal statutory approvals must be checked. If the BESS is connected with solar or operates behind the meter, the metering and protection scheme must match the local DISCOM requirements.
